Class Description
Rifle 1 is designed to make rifle shooting and handling approachable for first-time shooters and those looking to refresh their basics. Taught by Guardian Defense’s experienced instructors, this course provides a supportive, hands-on introduction to rifle safety and operation. The atmosphere is welcoming and professional – questions are encouraged, and class sizes are kept small so you get plenty of one-on-one instruction. No prior rifle experience is required. We will meet you at your skill level and guide you step by step.
Throughout the course, safety is emphasized at every step. We begin with the universal firearm safety rules and an overview of how a rifle functions, so you understand each part’s purpose. Then, through guided, step-by-step instruction, you’ll learn how to safely load and unload your rifle and establish a solid shooting stance and grip for stability and accuracy. You’ll also practice using your rifle’s sights or optics effectively and even setting up a sling for comfortable carry and improved support. In addition, we discuss important topics like owning, operating, and maintaining a rifle, and the best practices for secure storage and basic cleaning/maintenance. By the end of Rifle 1, you’ll have a solid foundation in safe rifle handling and the confidence to continue practicing and advancing your skills.

Your rifle, unloaded and in a case. Don’t have one? No problem – we have loaner rifles available (please let us know in advance if you need one).
At least 2 magazines (if applicable) and approximately 100 rounds of appropriate ammunition for your rifle (example: .223 or 5.56 caliber). We recommend brass-cased ammo; no steel-core rounds for indoor ranges.
Eye & Ear Protection: Quality shooting glasses and ear protection (earplugs or earmuff-style headsets). If you don’t have these, we can provide them – just mention it when signing up.
Clothing: Comfortable, weather-appropriate range attire. Wear closed-toe shoes and a shirt with a higher collar (to prevent hot brass from contacting skin). A brimmed cap and long pants are recommended. Dress in layers if needed for outdoor range conditions.
Extras: A photo ID (for range check-in/age verification), and a notebook & pen if you’d like to take notes during the classroom session. You may also want to bring water, snacks, and sunscreen (if training at an outdoor range).
Safety & Legal Note
Safety is our top priority. All firearms must arrive unloaded and in a secure case. (No live ammunition is permitted in the classroom portion.) Instructors will inspect all rifles at check-in, and throughout the class we enforce strict safety protocols. On the range, range safety rules will be explained and followed at all times under Mike and Jeff’s supervision to maintain a safe learning environment for everyone.
FAQ
Q: Do I need to own or bring my own rifle to take this course?
A: No firearm is required to enroll – if you don’t have your own rifle, we can provide a loaner rifle for you to use during the class (just let us know ahead of time so we can reserve one). Many students do bring their own rifle so they can learn with the exact firearm they’ll use in the future. If you do bring yours, make sure it’s unloaded and in a case when you arrive. Either way, we’ll ensure you have the equipment needed to fully participate in the training.
Q: I’ve never shot a gun before. Is this course really suitable for a complete beginner?
A: Absolutely! Rifle 1 is built for beginners, and you do not need any prior shooting experience. The instructors will start with the basics of safety and rifle operation, guiding you step by step through each skill. We take things at your pace – no one is made to feel left behind. Even if you’ve never handled a firearm, you’ll get comfortable with the rifle by the end of the class. Our instructors are patient and will make sure you feel confident and safe throughout the course.
Q: What is the class environment like?
A: The environment is friendly, supportive, and non-intimidating. We keep the class size small (around 8 students or fewer) so that each student gets plenty of individual attention. There’s a mix of ages and backgrounds – everyone is here to learn. Questions are not just welcome, they’re encouraged! Our instructors foster a professional yet approachable atmosphere where no one feels silly for asking something. The goal is to help you learn and build confidence in a relaxed setting. By the time we head to the range, you’ll know everyone and feel comfortable learning together. It’s a great way to overcome any nerves and enjoy the process of learning how to shoot safely.
